One step at a time...
The journey to wellness may not always be easy and brief. Usually, when the parents of a troubled child realize that external help is needed, the problem is already entrenched and longstanding. This is when we realize that hope and patience are indispensable. So, we begin the process with a first step toward recovery: recognition and acceptance of a problem. The next step is to approach the difficult situation with calmness, understanding, and skill.
Observe your child attentively
Notice the first signs of trouble: is your child withdrawn, moody, anxious, sad, overly agitated, oppositional, uncooperative, or fatigued? Unusual changes in behavior and mood are always good pointers and should not be overlooked. Children need the parents' attention and participation in their lives.
Talk to your child and find out
If your child suddenly becomes difficult, do not get emotional. Most likely, there are good reasons for such a change. Talk to the child calmly and try to find out what is happening in your child's life. Again, children need your undivided attention to feel secure and connected. Keen interest and attention by themselves serve as a powerful harmonizing and healing force.
Look for resources & get assistance
Many behavioral difficulties can be eventually overcome if proper attention and care is given to a child in need. Very frequently though, the problem at hand is so complex and multifaceted that parents are unable to deal with it. In such situations, external resources and expert assistance may be of great value. Luckily for parents and children, these resources are available.
